Mattress types explained: foam, hybrid, innerspring, and pocketed coil

Short answer: memory foam hugs your body and limits motion; innerspring uses connected steel coils for a bouncier, more traditional feel; pocketed coil uses individually wrapped coils that move separately; and a hybrid puts foam comfort layers on top of a coil support layer. No type is best for everyone, so lie down on a few at our Elk Grove store and ask what's on the floor.

A plain guide to the four main mattress types, with no brand names.

Shopping for a mattress gets confusing fast. Every label says "comfort" something. Since 2020 we've helped over 10,000 customers pick a bed, and most of them just want to know what the main types actually feel like. Here's the plain version.

The four main types at a glance

TypeHow it's builtHow it usually feels
Memory foamLayers of foam, no coilsSlow, body-hugging, quiet, little bounce
InnerspringConnected steel coils with thin comfort layersBouncy, firmer edge, traditional
Pocketed coilIndividually wrapped coilsSupportive with less motion than connected coils
HybridFoam comfort layers over a coil support layerContouring on top with some bounce

Memory foam

Memory foam softens with body heat and pressure, so it molds around your shoulders and hips. People often like it for pressure relief and because it absorbs movement when a partner rolls over. Some sleepers find it feels warm or makes it harder to change positions.

Innerspring

The classic mattress: a connected coil support system with a thinner layer of padding on top. It feels bouncy and easy to move on, and air moves through the coils. Because the coils are linked, you may feel more of your partner's movement.

Pocketed coil

Each coil sits in its own fabric pocket and moves independently. That helps the mattress follow the shape of your body and cuts down on motion transfer compared with connected coils. Many hybrids use pocketed coils as their base.

Hybrid

A hybrid combines a coil support layer, often pocketed coils, with thicker foam comfort layers on top. The goal is the contouring of foam with the support and bounce of coils.

How to choose

  • Think about how you sleep. Side sleepers often want more cushion at the shoulders and hips. Back and stomach sleepers often want firmer support.
  • Sleep with a partner? Try foam or pocketed coil if motion bothers you.
  • Sleep warm? Coil-based beds generally breathe more, but ask how each one is built.
  • Lie down for a few minutes in your normal sleep position. That tells you more than any label.

Questions people ask us

What is the difference between a hybrid and an innerspring mattress?

An innerspring uses a coil support system with thinner comfort layers on top. A hybrid pairs a coil support layer with thicker foam comfort layers, so it usually feels more contoured while keeping some bounce.

Is memory foam good for couples?

Memory foam generally limits motion transfer, so many couples like it. Pocketed coils also help because each coil moves on its own. The best way to know is to lie down on both together.

What is a pocketed coil mattress?

Each coil is wrapped in its own fabric pocket, so the coils move separately instead of as one connected unit. That tends to reduce motion and help the mattress follow your body.

Which mattress type sleeps coolest?

In general, coil mattresses allow more airflow than all-foam mattresses, but materials vary a lot. Ask us what is on the floor and how each one is built.
