How long does a mattress last?

Short answer: as a general guide, most mattresses last around 7 to 10 years, but how you sleep, your body weight, and what the mattress sits on can make it shorter or longer. If you wake up sore, see a sag, or feel springs, it's probably time, no matter how old it is. A new queen set at our Elk Grove store is $150.

The signs a mattress is worn out, what makes one last longer, and what replacing it costs here.

We hear this one every week from people walking into our showroom. They're not sure if their mattress is "bad enough" to replace. The age on the tag is only part of it. How your body feels in the morning tells you more.

Typical lifespan

There's no exact number, and nobody can promise one. As rough general guidance, many people get somewhere around 7 to 10 years from a mattress. Kids' and guest-room beds that get light use can go longer. A bed shared by two adults every night, or one without good support underneath, may wear out sooner.

Signs it's time for a new mattress

  • You wake up stiff or sore and feel better after sleeping somewhere else.
  • There's a visible dip or sag where you sleep.
  • You can feel springs or lumps.
  • It squeaks or creaks every time you move.
  • You roll toward the middle or toward your partner.
  • Your needs changed: a new partner, a growing kid, or a move to a bigger size.

What helps a mattress last longer

  • Good support underneath. A worn-out base can make a good mattress feel bad. Read do I need a box spring? to check yours. We sell box springs and bed frames.
  • A mattress protector to keep spills and sweat out.
  • Rotating it head to foot every few months, if the mattress is made for it.
  • Not jumping on it. Tell the kids.

If you want to raise your head or feet, an adjustable base is another option. Ours run $400 to $1,400. See is an adjustable base worth it?
